History of SSPO
SSPO is Founded
Prior to 1957, the technology of prosthetics and orthotics was still underdeveloped. Persons with disabilities in Thailand needed to obtain devices abroad. For this reason, Prof. Fuang Satsanguan and Dr. Damrong Kijkusol traveled to study and learn about prosthetics and orthotics making process with a German professional. It was then, the story of prosthetics and orthotics in Thailand began.
Collaboration
In 2001, the Nippon Foundation was in collaboration with; Sirindhorn National Medical Rehabilitation Institute (SNMRI), Ministry of Public Health (Thailand); and Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, to establish a prosthetist and orthotist college with a purpose to develop a prosthetics and orthotics education in bachelor level which then became the first bachelor program of prosthetics and orthotics in South East Asia. The program began enrolling the first batch students in 2002.
Named to the school
In 2006, Her majesty, Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn honorably named to the school ‘Sirindhorn School of Prosthetics and Orthotics’
Undergraduate Study
The school offers the educational programs to meet a variety of students’ demands as such Bachelor of Science in Prosthetics and Orthotics – Domestic Program and International Program
In 2009, our curriculum was acknowledged as the first program in South East Asia to be accredited by International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics at the highest level or ISPO Category-I
In 2019, we were the first school in the world to be accredited at Professional Prosthetist and Orthotist level with ‘Exemplary in All Area’ result
The school also has been certified the international standard of ISO 9001since 2009 until the present.
Postgraduate Study
SSPO offers two programs for postgraduate study; Master of Science in Prosthetics and Orthotics (International Program); and Doctoral Philosophy Program in Prosthetics and Orthotics (International Program)
Our PhD program is the first PhD in Prosthetics and Orthotics in Asia and is one of the only two P&O doctoral level programs in the world
Research
Sirindhorn School of Prosthetics and Orthotics provides a full support on student researches as well as a joint researches with international institutes such as Texas A&M University San Antonio (USA), the University of Strathclyde (United Kingdom) and University of Groningen (Netherlands)
Collaboration
The school is also in collaboration with Scandinavian Orthopaedic Laboratory, Thailand (SOL) operating Center of Excellence for Prosthetic and Orthotic Services (CEPO) in 2017 to deliver an excellent service through high technologies, fast and convenient service with world-class quality standard for the potential buyers and patients who afford an additional fee from government standard welfare
Globally
At the present, Sirindhorn School of Prosthetics and Orthotics has produced prosthetists and orthotists whom serve persons with disabilities for over 30 countries globally, with a desire to upgrade and promote P&O excellence to accomplish the determination of his majesty Mahitala Dhibesra Adulyadej Vikrom, the Prince Father,
